Youngsters "camp out" at Bethany, enjoy VBS

More than 400 children are discovering God while "camping out at Bethany" this  week. Our Vacation Bible School, entitled Camp EDGE, kicked off Monday morning and continues through Friday. VBS required more than 120 volunteers and support by the church staff. So far it's been an awesome week, full of laughter, song, crafts, recreation and, most importantly, "experiencing and discovering God everywhere!"

Salkehatchie: Service camp brings S.C. youth to Bethany

Youth and adult volunteers prayer before a day of work during the 2008 Summerville Salkehatchie Camp.

Bethany will host the Summerville Salkehatchie Camp June 21-28. Some 80 youth and adult participants are expected.

The Bethany Men’s Club (United Methodist Men) will provide breakfast every morning during this year’s camp. Our sisters and brothers at Murray UMC will provide supper on the Wednesday of camp. Other meal providers are still being identified. If your Sunday School class or church group would like to provide a meal, please contact Brenda Frye at 871-3529 or 870-6654.

Other needs for this year’s camp include:

  • “Runners” to pick up and deliver building materials to work sites (must have a pick-up truck).

  • Building materials such as 16d and 8d galvanized common nails, 2-, 3-, and 4-inch paint brushes, paint rollers and sleeves, paint trays and liners, drop cloths and caulking tubes and guns.

  • Cases of 16- or 24-oz. bottled water and Gatorade.

If you wish to donate lumber or paint, please check with Marty Gunter before purchasing these items.

You can also support our camp by writing a check to “Summerville Salkehatchie” and placing it in the Salkehatchie mail box in the church office. Contributions marked for “Summerville Salkehatchie” may also be made to Berlin G. Myers Lumber Company. Gift cards from local home centers are also welcome, as are cash donations in any amount.

Our most important need, however, is for the dedicated and continuous prayers of the Bethany congregation for the success of this ministry. Please be in prayer for the safe and timely completion of all planned work, the safety of all youth and adult workers, and for God’s continued blessings of the homeowners, their families and the Salkehatchie volunteers who serve them.

Notes about worship in the Fellowship Hall this summer

While our Sanctuary undergoes renovations this summer, we will continue to hold the 8:45 and 11:15 a.m. worship services in the Fellowship Hall. The services will be held in the Camp Meeting style, so please dress casually. Camp Meetings are a tradition dating back to the 1800’s when United Methodists would attend “camp” for several days of preaching, worshiping and hymn singing.

Dismissal for Children’s Church

Children will be dismissed for Children’s Church at the side entrance of the Fellowship Hall. Children should use the doors located at the aisle in front of the rows of blue chairs.

School supplies sought for Hands of Christ ministry

The Local Missions Committee has begun collecting school supplies for local school children through the Hands of Christ mission. The goal is to provide supplies for 1,000 students at Williams Elementary in St. George and some schools in Dorchester District II for the 2009-2010 school year. These students’ families would otherwise be unable to provide the school supplies.

Local Missions is asking for your help in providing the supplies listed below. If you are unable to purchase the complete list of supplies, that’s okay. The committee will appreciate items that you are able to afford.

Since not everyone is a "shopper," Local Missions team members will gladly do the shopping for you, if you prefer to make a monetary donation. Please make your check to Bethany and write "Local Missions Hands of Christ mission" on the memo line.

The committee also needs volunteers to help with the packing and delivery of the supplies in August. Please pray about helping with this mission and join us as we help future generations obtain good educations by ensuring they have the school supplies that they need. Each child requires:

2 composition notebooks (black & white, preferred)

1 spiral notebook

1 pack wide-ruled
notebook paper

1 binder (2-inch)

1 pack 5-subject dividers

4 dry erase markers

2 highlighters

25 pencils

1 container Clorox
Wet Wipes

1 bottle hand sanitizer

1 box Kleenex

4 glue sticks

2 sticky note pads

1 boxes crayons (24 ct.)

1 box colored pencils

1 box Crayola markers

1 box Ziploc Bags (gallon
& sandwich size)

1 roll of paper towels

1 container baby wipes

1 each, folders (red, yellow, green, orange, blue & purple) with pockets & prongs

1 pencil box

1 pair scissors

Suggested places to purchase items: Dollar Tree, Dollar General, Walmart and Target. Please bring school supplies to the church no later than Wednesday, August 5. Thank you.

Meals on Wheels needs volunteers for summer food delivery

Serving a meal never felt so good! Many elderly and/or disabled persons in our community depend on Meals on Wheels for a nutritious noon meal Monday through Friday. Could you give a few hours a month to help provide this service? Assistance is needed both to deliver and to help package the meals. Meals are delivered by teams of two and partners can be provided! Call Leslie at the Meals on Wheels office 873-8224.  Please come, bring a friend and lend a hand. You’ll be very glad you did!

Hope for Africa Children's Choir presents concert at Bethany July 6

Bethany will welcome the Hope for Africa Children's Choir to our church on Monday, July 6. The choir, from Humble Place UMC in Mukono, Uganda, will present a program of song in the Fellowship Hall at 7 o'clock that evening.

The children come from a land where bananas, mangos and pineapples spring forth in abundance from the earth. Yet, it’s also a land ravished by poverty, war and AIDS. In fact, some of the children in the choir are orphans from the city of Gulu, where people have suffered from an indescribably horrible war. For the past 20 years, children have been abducted and turned into child soldiers overnight. Yet this choir provides a peaceful witness for us and the world, glorifying God through music while raising money for their mission efforts in Uganda.

Admission to the concert is free.  A love offering will be received.
