New Nursery Rooms Open for Infants

Beginning Easter Sunday, all of our infants, from birth to walking, will use the newly-completed nursery rooms. The rooms have been equipped to care for the youngest of our children. Two New Bash Classes Added to Spring Line-Up

Two new Bethany Bash classes have been added to the line-up of courses that begin on April 26. Course subjects include a study of the Gospel of Mark, a class on relationship "management by scripture," one about developing a healthy lifestyle, a class on woodcarving and one on crafting. The courses will continue for four weeks, with the last class on May 17. Please register for the class of your choice:

MBS: Management By Scripture
Led by Brad Davis

Each of us is a collection of personality styles that God has combined to make us all as special as snowflakes. However, there are four primary personality traits in all of us that shape the way we hear things, say things, understand and inter-react with others. MBS links the four primary personality traits to those of the four Gospels. The purpose of the class is to provide attendees with an understanding of MBS to improve their interpersonal relationships and gain a better insight to the Gospel lessons by understanding the authors’ personalities.

Your Health, Your Way
Led by Dr. Bob Salamon

This class will explore natural, drug-free and safe ways to a healthier body and life. Dr. Bob Salamon of Lowcountry Chiropractic will discuss the true meaning of health, the role of symptoms in the body, and the basic building blocks of getting and staying healthy. This class is designed for anyone who wants to take control of their health, and Dr. Bob will help get you on track with practical and easy ways to begin the process.

Mark’s Subplot: Portrait of Faithful Following
Led by Dr. Jo Locklair

Interpreters of Mark’s gospel have seldom considered the crucial importance of women to Mark’s overall narrative. This study will focus on the subplot of women to determine its narrative function in the overall story. An overview of this subplot will be examined first. Then, with the overall subplot of women in mind, a closer look at the episodes of individual women will be taken to discover the important functions they carry in the story. This will help us discern how centrally the subplot of women operates in Mark’s gospel.

Woodcarving
Led by Sarah Kuhnell

Woodcut or relief carving can be an end in itself, or the carving can be inked and transferred to paper in a printing process. In this four-week class, we will learn design transfer using Chrismons or other symbols; use of woodcut tools to create the design and add texture; and, hopefully, inking and printing a set of simple designs. Bring your ideas! These simple skills have wider applications and may fire your imagination and inspire other projects. A supplies list will be available in the Education Office in mid-April.

Creative Crafts
Led by Lynn Dukes

During this series of classes, you will make an attractive Low Country wall hanging, from the “By Wisdom a House is Built” series patterns.  Approximate size will be 20" x 30". You will learn to do raggedy edge appliqué, primitive embroidery and some quilting. Sewing ability is not required. A kit will be provided for $5. Please register in advance for this class and bring basic sewing supplies: scissors, needles, thread, etc.

To register for a Bash lass, please complete the Bethany Bash Classes Registration Form. There are three ways to make reservations for supper: complete the Bethany Bash Dinner Reservation Form, call 873-1230 by 9 a.m. the Monday before each meal, or complete the reservation form in your Sunday worship bulletin.

Community Orchestra to Play for Bethany Bash

The spring session of Bethany Bash will kick off on April 19 with a performance by the Summerville Community Orchestra. Under the direction of Alexander Agrest, the orchestra’s Bethany Bash program will contain a mix of popular and classical music, including Pietro Mascagni’s beautiful Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana. In that number, Susan Cadwell, Bethany’s church organist, will accompany the orchestra on the sanctuary organ.

Plan to join us at 5:30 p.m. for a Bethany Bash supper, followed by this special performance in our sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. To make reservations for supper, complete the Bethany Bash Dinner Reservation Form, call 873-1230 by 9 a.m., Monday, April 17, or complete the reservation form in the Sunday worship bulletin.

Haiti Orphans Perform at Area Church

The Resurrection Dance Theatre of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, will perform at Summerville Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, April 19. The Resurrection Dance Theatre is the cultural touring arm of St. Joseph’s Home for boys, an orphanage for abandoned street children founded 20 years ago by a member of the Mother Theresa’s Order in the Catholic Church. Thirteen dancers, all former street children ranging in age from eight to 20, perform with the group. They present a broad repertoire of story dances depicting the history and culture of Haiti and incorporating traditional Haitian and African dance movements. Authentic Haitian drumming, colorful costumes and the exuberant athleticism of the young dancers all combine to create an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages.

The performance will begin at 7 p.m. on the stage in Summerville Presbyterian’s gym/fellowship hall. The performance is free and open to the public. A love offering will be taken after the performance, with all money going to the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys.

One of the way Christians grow is through service. Our Lord said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” but you don’t have to go on a mission trip to serve. You can do so right here at Bethany United Methodist Church. There is a place at Bethany for every one of our members to serve. Here are some areas with an urgent need for volunteers:

Bethany needs volunteers in a number of different areas. Can you help? Just an hour or two a week can make a huge difference! There is an immediate need for volunteers to help in these areas:

  • Data entry and worship attendance

  • Receptionist

  • Bulletin boards

  • Website updates.

If you can help, contact Dana Wells at the church office, 873-1230.
