ASCEND Opportunities

Youth Council

The youth council is formed by a group of students who meet with the goal of furthering the mission of Ascend. Rachel seeks out their advice and opinions on all aspects of the student ministry program. Their responsibilities include: taking leadership on Sunday evenings, planning events, helping decide on sermon series, finding mission opportunities, and just being generally awesome. The application opens every summer in July, and the council runs from August-July for the year.

Youth are trained multiple times a year to help with worship services – lighting candles and assisting with offering and Communion. Such participation helps youth develop leadership skills and ensures young people that they are an integral part of the worship at Bethany.

Ascend Adult Volunteers

While Ascend is the Student Ministry at Bethany, the backbone of the ministry is its adult volunteers. The main responsibility of the adults is to form loving and caring relationships with the students, while guiding and encouraging them to becoming disciples of Christ. Ascend is always in search of adult volunteers! Adults are needed to help lead small groups, teach Sunday School classes, serve dinner, set up and tear down the fellowship hall, chaperone retreats, and much more!

Confirmation 2020! We will have a parent meeting on February 26th, and will then meet every Wednesday starting at 6pm. Confirmation is traditionally for current 7th graders and other students that desire to participate and have not previously been confirmed. Confirmation is a special time for students as they engage in deeper knowledge of their relationship with Jesus Christ. Confirmation consists of lecture, small group, activities, mission, and a retreat.

Ascend Missions

Every month Ascend seeks to serve the community by having a Mission Night during one of the Sunday evening programs. By giving back to the community, we believe that we become better committed disciples of Jesus Christ.

  • Mission nights have included:
    • Packing Thanksgiving Baskets
    • Community Thanksgiving Dinner Servers
    • Writing letters to natural disaster victims
    • Volunteering at Bethany Fall Festival
    • Help with the annual Easter Egg Hunt
    • Flowertown Festival Parking
    • Serving at Home of Hope
    • Volunteering at Living Christmas Story
    • Serving at Bethany Tea Room

We believe that, as followers of Jesus Christ, that we are to live on mission at all times. It is important to give our students mission opportunities to create a mission minded culture.

Sunday Night Ascend

Small Groups

Ascend is our Sunday evening worship service geared towards middle and high school students. We meet in the Fellowship Hall from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. throughout the school year. Ascend includes food, fellowship time, worship, and small groups. This is a time where we grow as young disciples of Jesus Christ through real and relevant teaching and experiences. Come join us!

Ascend looks to create students who become deeply committed Christians, leaders of the church, and help them grow in a loving relationship with Christ. Through mission work, building relationships, and meeting students where they are, we challenge youth to grow into fully committed disciples.

Rachel Carter

Rachel Carter is the Youth Pastor for Bethany UMC. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to grab a coffee!

Whitney Slack

Student Ministries Intern
Whitney (also known as Whit) is a junior attending Charleston Southern University pursuing a major in Business with a minor in Christian Studies. You might find Whitney drinking coffee, going to Target, or having fun doing homework (sike!). Her closet is full of floral patterns and she has an obsession with rose gold. Whitney used to be a softball pitcher, but now she pitches suggestions about how to improve the youth group or where to go to lunch with Rachel.
What up Whit?

Dan Steffy

Ascend Band Intern
Dan is a sophomore attending Charleston Southern University pursuing a major in Christian Studies with a double minor in Theatre and Graphic Design. You might see Dan casually climbing mountains, taking pictures of anything he can find, or brewing coffee at the Nexton Starbucks. When Dan plays ultimate frisbee, he says “Who needs shoes anyways?” and tosses them aside.
Hey Dan!
