Bethany's Conceptional Development Plan
November 2007

A message from Jack Harrison, chairperson, of the Bethany UMC Church Council

For 150 years Bethany UMC has faithfully served the greater Summerville area. The Church’s growth has paralleled the growth of the community. We have truly been blessed in many ways. The scriptures remind us that with a blessing comes a responsibility (Luke 12:48b): "From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded."

So what is expected of us in the years to come? The scriptures are clear on this point and are reinforced by the Discipline of the United Methodist Church (our "constitution"). The purpose of church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ and bring people into a closer relationship with Christ. To me, this means that we must continue to minister to our growing community and, in turn, plan to continue to grow ourselves.

In late 2001 the Church Council charged the Long Range Planning (LRP) Committee with developing a 10-15 year vision for Bethany. That committee has shared its thoughts with the Church Council and developed a sound plan for our future. (Click here to see the proposed development plan.)

We are early in the process, and there will be many opportunities for input by Bethany members.

Summerville continues to grow, and Bethany needs to be prepared to grow as the community grows. It is important to remember that our real concern is a healthy, vital church, not numbers, per se; however, statistics show that healthy churches are, in fact, growing churches.

In order to alleviate current crowding and accommodate future growth, the concepts under consideration include two parts:

Some of the concerns that are being addressed are:

  • Worship seating capacity (Folding chairs are required in the Sanctuary with increasing frequency.)

  • Size and flexibility of the liturgical area (The full choir currently will not fit in the choir area.)

  • Parking

  • Dedicated student ministry (youth) space

  • Space to accommodate additional Sunday School classes

  • Space to accommodate a growing Leisure Ministries program

Status & the Path Forward

Background

  • Long Range Planning Committee, at the direction of the Church Council has developed broad concepts for additional development. The Church Council has been given, at least, semi annual status reports

  • The Finance Committee has developed funding options and feels that both projects are feasible

  • Church Council has approved the concepts and asked for information to be shared with the congregation

Next Steps

Short Term

  • Worship Committee considers an additional service

  • Church Council appoints a Building Committee

  • Building Committee addresses the remaining short term projects

  • Short term building projects funded through a bank loan as recommended by Finance

  • Total cost not to exceed $450,000 without Council approval

Long Term

  • Consider a new church start(s)

  • Church Council appoints a second Building Committee to raise funds for and execute the longer range projects

  • Capital campaign not to begin before 2009

  • Congregational and District approval required before proceeding with construction

  • Costs not well developed at this early stage, but the overall scope is expected to be larger than the previous capital project of approximately $4.8 million. Phased construction is possible
